Illuminating Candle Holders,
Mercury Glass and More

Candle light creates many moods and emotions: quietness, love, peace, romance. I love using candles when dining with my husband, family or friends, but I also use them to create a sense of repose when I walk in the door after a long day's work. I like taking a deep breath and slowing down once I enter my home. Lighting a candle really works. I highly recommend it.

I think my fascination with mercury glass candle holders came from following Rachel Ashwell. Her Shabby Chic style inspired me over the years and has guided me towards other designers to love and admire, like Brooke Giannetti and her delightful Patina Style. Each designer has a penchant for the worn and tattered, items aged to perfection, and in Rachel's case perhaps a little bling thrown in for good measure. The bling for me is the glow that illuminates from several silvery votives scattered about a table or mantle -- subtle, calming, and oh so pretty.

Here are some cool vintage-style candle holders we just received in the shop this week. Do any of these speak to you? I have always been a little candle-crazy and I love them all. The white bone china votives are modern and fun, and when lit cast an ethereal shimmer. I am especially drawn to the mercury glass-style pieces and look for unique designs every season to keep things fresh and exciting. My shop is filled with lots of sparkle right now.

New York Times Scented Candle
Tobias Wong & Various Projects

"The Times of New York" candle

Is this for real? A candle that smells like newsprint from The New York Times? Apparently so, although not produced by the famed newspaper, rather inspired by it.

Like many people, I too have a thing about the smell of newly printed paper and newly printed books. I am inclined to love that "printed" odor over the smell of my laptop burning in the night.

I can't wait to get my hands (or nose) on this candle, The Times of New York. According to the Project No. 8 website, "the scent of the candle is newsy, with hints of guaiacwood, cedar, musk, spice, with a powdery note and velvet nuance, meant to mimic the aroma of black ink on newsprint." This candle came to be from now-deceased designer/artist Tobias Wong, and was produced by Various Projects and Josée Lepage of Bondtoo. I hear it is being sold for $65. at Project No. 8, in a limited production of 1000. This shop is located in a favorite place of mine that I've written about, The Ace Hotel NYC.

Inspiring and Magical Interiors

I was recently doing research on home interior photography and came across images of rooms and exteriors that were inspiring and what I would call "magical." I wasn't looking for them, they just appeared as I clicked through interesting blogs and websites and I thought I would share them with you.

I like it when "magical" spaces take you to a far away, dreamy place, sometimes romantic or colorful and fun, sometimes breathtaking, but always surprising, beautiful and other-worldly. A fantasy place, of sorts, a vacation for the mind--which we all need now and then.
